I read 5 cyber threat reports this month, so you don’t have to. I’ve been reading threat reports for three decades now, from the time they came in CDs to when they now come as 80-page PDFs full of “AI-driven insights”. Most of them repeat the same template: malware, ransomware, phishing, rinse, repeat.   But this year felt different. I went through 5 recent reports from ENISA, Trellix, NCC Group, PacketWatch, and DSCI + Seqrite, and here’s what actually stood out. Not the graphs. Not the jargon. It’s the patterns beneath the data. (1) 73% of incidents still start with compromised identities. Credentials, not code, are the easiest way in. Attackers don’t “hack” anymore. They log in. And too many teams still treat MFA as a silver bullet. It’s not. (2) Data Security Council of India’s data shows over 85% of detections in India are still signature based. That means your defence depends on recognising yesterday’s malware. Meanwhile, attackers are re-compiling payloads every 6 hours. You’re chasing ghosts with a camera that only sees the past. (3) NCC found ransomware incidents jumped 28% in September alone, but what’s scarier is how quiet they’ve become. No obvious attachments, no alerts. Just token theft, lateral movement, and encryption triggered at 3 AM on a Sunday. (4) PacketWatch and ENISA both stress the same reality: supply chains are the new front line. We’re integrating faster than we can audit. Every plugin, billing system, or remote access tool is another potential breach path. (5) SEQRITE + DSCI tracked 369M detections across 8.4M endpoints last year. That’s over 1,200 threats per device, per year. Every second, 12 new detections (just in India.) The question isn’t “how many threats exist.” It’s how many go undetected until it’s too late. From what we observe inside Seqrite Labs, a significant portion of malicious activity never triggers conventional alerts at all, it shows up only when you track behaviours, not just signatures. Cybersecurity used to be about stopping threats. Now, it’s about surviving impact. The best teams I’ve seen this year aren’t “secure.” They’re resilient, fast at detecting, containing, and recovering. If you had to double your security budget in one area this year, would you spend it on prevention or response? DPDP won’t hurt you because it’s strict. It will hurt you because your assumptions are wrong. The DPDP Act isn’t difficult because the law is complex. It’s difficult because many CXOs are approaching it with the wrong assumptions. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes CXOs are making with DPDP and how to avoid them. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 #𝟭 Treating DPDP like a compliance project instead of a business transformation DPDP changes how organisations collect, store, process, and monetise data. It demands a shift in how leaders think about trust, governance, and customer experience. Smart organisations are using this moment to strengthen privacy as a competitive differentiator. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 #2 Jumping into tools before doing data mapping Before buying consent platforms or automation tools, ask: Do we truly know where all our personal data lives? Data visibility is the foundation. Without it, no solution, however advanced, can deliver meaningful compliance. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 #3 Delegating DPDP entirely to IT or legal DPDP demands organizational accountability. Boards will question CXOs directly on: > Do we have a consent framework? > Are vendors compliant? > Are breach-readiness drills done? Leadership needs to own DPDP, not outsource it. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 #4 Underestimating vendor and third-party risk Most DPDP failures will occur through marketing partners, SaaS tools, analytics vendors, outsourced developers, cloud services. DPDP holds you, the Data Fiduciary, responsible, not the vendor. A strong privacy program = strong third-party governance. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 #5 Assuming there is “plenty of time” There isn’t. Consent flows, deletion workflows, log retention, breach-notification plans, vendor contracts, all require months of preparation. Early movers will convert privacy into trust advantage. For organisations looking to do more than “just comply”, we’ve invested deeply in privacy-by-design solutions at Seqrite, covering data discovery, governance, breach-readiness, and fraud-prevention layers. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Bring privacy to the forefront of your business, not just your compliance checklist. If you’re a CXO preparing your DPDP roadmap, I’m always happy to share what we’re building and how it can accelerate your journey. DPDP won’t reward the perfect, it will reward the proactive leadership. The CXOs who elevate privacy to the boardroom will lead the next decade of digital trust.
