[announce] matplotlib 1.5.0 released

Hey all, We are pleased to finally announce the release of matplotlib 1.5.0! It has been over a year since the last feature release and we have had over 230 people contribute to this cycle. This release of matplotlib has several major new features including - Auto-redraw using the object-oriented API in interactive mode. - Most plotting functions now support labeled data API [Jan Schulz]. - Color cycling has extended to all style properties [Ben Root]. - Four new perceptually uniform color maps, including the soon-to-be default 'viridis'. [Stefan van der Walt and Nathaniel Smith]. - More included style sheets. - Many small plotting improvements. - Proposed new framework for managing the GUI toolbar and tools. - Pixel-value on mouse over for imshow [Steven Silvester] For demos of some of these features in action see this notebook: https://gist.github.com/tacaswell/72b0d579aeb54d4fbf87 which is version of the talk I presented at scipy, pydata Seattle and pygotham this summer. There will be more in-depth demos of the new features coming. This release has a new required dependency, cycler <http://matplotlib.org/cycler> , for composing complex style cycles. In 1.5.0 we have dropped official support for python 2.6 and 3.3. The next matplotlib release will be the 2.0 default-style-only release, planned for 1-2 months from now. Tom

FW: About linked-brushing features in Matplotlib

Dear contributors, I am Jerry, a developer relying on Python to analyze data. I searched through Matplotlib webpage trying to find a hint about how to make "linked brushing" feature across graphs and data, however it is not successful so far. The "linked-brushing" feature means: taking a scatter plot and a histogram based on the same data for example, when some of the points on the scatter plot are selected, since those points are linked to some data from which the plot is built, the parts of the same data on the histogram will be automatically selected and highlighted too. The attached is an example from Bokeh plots. Could I ask: 1. where can I find hints about how to realize this feature with Matplotlib? 2. As there is other visualization packages based on Matplotlib, taking Seaborn as an example, if this feature is realized with Matplotlib, can it be used directly into Seaborn? If yes, could you please share a few hints on how to do that if possible? Thank you all very much in advance! Jerry Li

Hey all, We are experimenting with gitter to see if it is useful to us: https://gitter.im/matplotlib/matplotlib The main benefit of this tool that it provides a public, quasi-readable, high-bandwidth communication tool to move conversations out of private gchat threads. IPython uses gitter quite heavily and seems very happy with it. One thing they learned is that if any major decisions are made on gitter, a summary of the discussion and the decision needs to be written up and sent to the mailing list. Tom

v1.5.0rc3

While Thomas is away, I've tagged a 1.5.0rc3 release, as there have been a number of critical bugfixes since rc2. Hopefully this will be the last release candidate before 1.5.0. As I haven't done a matplotlib release in a while, I'll need to sync with Thomas about how the conda-forge packages get created before those will be available. Generalize BoxStyle?

Looking into the recent "how to make a toothed curve" question, I started to wonder if the BoxStyle stuff could be refactored into something composed of draw style mutators, and at the same time rework the current draw style implementation? This way, one can easily create fancy lines or boxes, all using the same code and what-ever options are available for boxes are also available for lines. Does anyone see a roadblock/pitfall with this idea? (note, I am aware that this wouldn't solve the original poster's question because the sawtooth wouldn't be filled in, but it would be neat to have anyway). Cheers! Ben Root

MPL2 Logo

Looking at the current logo, I wondered whether we would want to change this as part of the style changes when we release 2.0... as well as marketing our new style, the current logo uses jet to make the graph... Playing around with the examples/api/logo2.py I found changing line 68 to: bar.set_facecolor(cm.viridis(r/8.)) gave pleasing results with the largest wedge getting coloured green (see attached for uncropped version).

SVG test issue

Hello everyone, I am trying to run the test suite, but the conversion SVG -> PNG seems to have some issues. I think it comes from my part, but would like some help if you already encoutered the issue. I am running inkscape 0.91, which may be why there is some issue as SVG is converted thanks to inkscape, although it seems the expected png is generated on the fly too, which would mean using the same software... Hi, I developed a tool in Python 2.7.8 and packaged it using "py2exe".
