  • Check out this excellent guest post on our blog by Rebecca Brewer, who signed up to 60 charity email lists to see how far charity email marketing has come in the last 8 years. Great insights!

Charity Digital Marketing Agency | Do-Gooder and Proud | MD at Platypus Digital - B Corp | Helping Charities Raise More Money and Reach More People Online

Has charity email marketing improved in the last 8 years, or got worse? Our long time client, event collaborator and Platy-pal, Rebecca Brewer, signed up to 60 charity email lists and posted what she found on this ace guest blog. The findings were a truly mixed bag of HTML templates, CTAs and merge fields. The good news: Charities are trying harder to build relationships now, not just asking for donations. Progress! The bad news: 16% of charities had no way to sign up for emails at all. And 17 charities never sent a single email after sign-up. Of the 60, only 8 charities asked about supporters' connection to their cause. And none of them actually used that information in the emails they sent afterwards. But there's more good stuff in there, and solid inspiration for any charity still sticking like glue to the good old fashioned newsletter format in their email marketing. Check out the full research on the Platypus Digital | B Corp blog – link in the comments.

  • Awesome to see our omnichannel campaign raising awareness about the Arthritis UK rebrand out in the wild! We also have ads live across Google, Microsoft, Display, audio and digital out-of-home - as shown by Jamie Pitts, CMgr FCMI Our campaign even includes a study to measure the effectiveness of our programmatic campaign. This has been an awesome new way to support the charity, formerly Versus Arthritis, as it moves into this exciting new phase in its history.

  • Our awesome client Sands - baby loss charity runs Baby Loss Awareness Week every year, with 2025's starting today. It's a time for families to remember their babies and raise awareness about pregnancy and baby loss. This year's theme is 'Together, we care' – focusing on looking after ourselves and each other through grief. The campaign includes: - Wave of Light – families across the world lighting candles at 7pm to remember babies gone too soon - Ribbon Run – thousands coming together to run, walk or wheel in memory of their babies - Pink and Blue – communities turning pink and blue to show support - Ribbon Appeal – every donation ties a ribbon to their Manchester display, creating a stunning tribute We love how the charity creates space for people to participate in whatever way feels right. They even say it's okay not to take part in Baby Loss Awareness Week, knowing that grief doesn't follow a calendar. We're super proud to promote Baby Loss Awareness Week for Sands, to help them support bereaved families in their darkest moments.

  • Thanks so much to the lovely folk at Migrateful for a lovely afternoon of preparing and eating awesome food together!

Paintballing and escape rooms have their place but there's nothing like preparing food together, eating the food and having a positive impact on the experience of refugees and migrants in the UK. Yesterday the Platypus team joined together at Migrateful cookery school to learn about traditional Pakistani food and to create a veritable feast of a meal for 17 people. We had pakoras, salads and so much more besides. There was something really magical about cooking alongside each other, with new foods and techniques, and sharing in the results of our work and supporting this awesome charity which runs cookery classes taught by refugees and migrants on their journey to integration. They work in a beautiful kitchen, the volunteers are incredibly helpful and friendly and overall it was just the best experience we could have asked for. Thanks so much to everyone at Migrateful for having us. Book a class with them too!

  • Just dropped: the Charity Digital Skills Report from Zoe Amar FCIM and Nissa R. Three stats that'll make you comically spit out your coffee: 🤖 76% are using AI (up from 61%) but 44% of boards have "poor" AI skills. Everyone's pressing buttons but nobody knows what they do. 💸 69% say money's their biggest barrier yet digital strategy adoption is going backwards (44% vs 50% last year). Don't abandon the roadmap just when you need it most. 🚪 51% have fled X/Twitter - the biggest platform exodus since MySpace died. Great to see so many fleeing the cesspit it's become. BUT despite being skint and strategically confused, 63% still made digital progress this year. The charity sector's got more resilience than a Nokia 3310. And yet, small charities are still getting absolutely hammered while large ones cruise ahead. The digital divide isn't narrowing, it's becoming a flippin' chasm. Time for funders to stop treating digital as "nice to have" and start funding it like the mission-critical infrastructure it actually is. Full brutal truth in the comments!

  • Pronouns are more than just words – they're an important way people express their identity and feel included at work. If you haven't seen Stonewall's beginner's guide to pronouns, read it and discover: The basics: ✅ Pronouns like she/her, he/him, they/them help us refer to ourselves and others respectfully ✅ "They" as a singular pronoun has been used since 1375 – it's not new! ✅ Some people use multiple pronouns or prefer to be addressed by name only At work: 👍 When unsure, just ask nicely or listen to how others refer to someone 👍 If you make a mistake, apologise briefly, correct yourself, and move on 👍 Practice using correct pronouns – it gets easier with time Lead by example: 😊 Introduce yourself with name and pronouns in meetings 😊 Include pronouns in email signatures - we encourage this! 😊 Senior leaders can model inclusive behaviour in all communications Sometimes people who feel they have to state pronouns because they’ve been misgendered before. But if everyone does it, it takes the burden off individuals and just makes it a normal thing to do. It's a great guide from Stonewall - link in the comments!

  • We're hiring at Platypus Digital! 🎉 Two roles that could genuinely change your career trajectory (and the world). First up: PPC Marketing Executive. You'll be the person making Google Ads sing for charity clients, turning clicks into donations and supporters into champions. Think Google Ads campaigns that actually matter - not selling dodgy supplements or yoghurt, but helping charities reach people who truly need their services. Second: Digital Marketing Assistant. This one's for someone who's been tinkering with digital marketing on the side, maybe running their pal's Instagram or is constantly the accidental techie at home. No formal experience required - just curiosity, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to learn. Both roles come with proper benefits (35 days holiday, profit share, enhanced parental leave), hybrid working from our London Bridge office, and up to 10% of your time to work pro bono for a cause you care about. So if you're tired of optimising CPCs for companies flogging stuff people don't really need, maybe it's time for a change. Applications close Monday 30th June at 8am. Links to full info in the comments. Non-graduates very welcome to apply.

Delivery Lead at Platypus Digital | Chartered Manager | Executive Masters in Leadiership Alum at Bayes Business School

For me, today marks three years at Platypus Digital | B Corp - how time flies! I took some time today to look back at my time so far and in that time, I've: - Learnt how to navigate a tonne of systems, including (but definitely not limited to!) GA4, GTM, Supermetrics, Optymzr and Google Ads. - Provided our team with Project Management, Data and Strategic Support across 76 clients on 210 projects (including a number of retainers). - Been able to pitch, work on and then report on campaigns and data projects - playing a role at some point across the entire lifecycle of some of our client accounts - Delivered some Programmatic campaigns with some amazing charities who are using Programmatic Advertising for the first time, with the support of James Hunter and the team at StackAdapt. It's been one hell of a learning curve but I've loved playing a role in supporting our delivery teams to create the most amazing campaigns they're running for so many charities. A special thanks to Will Cardy for putting up with me providing roughly 3 analogies a week and generally just being an incredible manager! I'm also 60% of the way to my 5-week sabbatical that I will get at the year 5 mark, not that I'm counting 😊 Here's to starting Year 4!

  • While most organisations wonder whether Nextdoor is worth it, our ace client Dementia UK smashed their legacy fundraising targets there. Here's the results when we decided to help them test advertising on the neighbourhood app during Free Wills Month 👇 ✅ 35% above CTR benchmark ✅ 30% below their CPA goal ✅ 392 free will enquiries in just three weeks ✅ Surpassed their annual target They targeted people in their local neighbourhoods, where conversations about wills and legacy giving naturally happen. The best bit is that this was their first test on the platform. Imagine the scaling potential when we build on what we've learned. Naomi from Dementia UK said they're definitely considering Nextdoor again for future gifts in wills campaigns - and potentially other areas of the charity too. Props to the Dementia UK team for being willing to test new digital waters 🙌
