About us

Hello, we’re Starling. Banking was broken – so we decided to fix it. The vision? Fast technology, fair service and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time. We built Britain’s first digital bank. One hard-won banking licence later, we set about giving people a new way to spend, save and manage their money (and take better care of the planet, too). We’re changing banking for good. Back then, we were obsessed with unravelling the knotty world of finance and solving people’s problems rather than selling them stuff. We still are. Since then, we’ve grown. A lot. Over four million accounts (and four account types!). A team of thousands. Headquartered in London with offices in Cardiff, Dublin, Manchester and Southampton. Five years voted Which? Recommended Provider and Britain's Best Banking Brand. Still zero branches. Our culture is open, inclusive and focused on solving real customer problems, with an emphasis on doing the right thing, even when it’s not always the easy thing. From our approach to working together and sustainability to how we build our products, our decisions need to make the world – and Starling – a better place to be. Everyone at Starling is essential to our mission, which is really quite simple: to solve our customer’s problems – and build the best bank in the world! And now we're providing Starling to other banks, via a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) proposition through our subsidiary Engine, using the proprietary technology platform that it uses to power our own bank.

  • The seven year Which?: We’ve been named as a Which? Recommended Provider for the seventh year in a row. And our customer score of 86% means we're top of the table as the Which? best bank of 2025. Which? highlighted our current account features including Spaces and Bills Manager as being stand out, and we’re always thrilled to see customers say, “They are the best bank I’ve been with.” A big thanks goes to Team Starling for all their hard work in securing this recommendation, and for the last six too. We’re working on even more exciting features and we can’t wait to share them with you all soon.

  • We had the pleasure of hosting our Arsenal Football Club ambassador, Alessia Russo, last week for a really enlightening discussion with our very own Ellie Cross. Some of the highlights: • Control the controllables. When under pressure to perform, Alessia advised that she focuses on what she can control: training hard, preparing well, and trusting that the outcome will follow. • A burden or a blessing? On the responsibility of growing the game: "It doesn’t feel like a burden. We want to do this, we want to help make the game better. We’re so fortunate to have the opportunities that we do, so we want to pass this on.". • The big question. We asked Alessia, "What’s the most important thing that partners like Starling can do to help women's football?". She passed the challenge right back to us! Challenge accepted, Alessia. And a surprise answer to finish: if football hadn't worked out, young Alessia wanted to be a doughnut seller! Glad she stuck with winning trophies for her country, but we appreciate the enterprising spirit 💪

Our year-long partnership with Small Business Britain is officially in flight! 🚀 We’re committed to helping women start and scale businesses. Not least because by helping female founders thrive, an estimated £250 billion could be added to the UK economy. To launch the partnership, we hosted 180 founders at Emirates Stadium for the Arsenal Football Club Women's vs. Chelsea Women's game. Guests also received their own professional headshot from renowned fashion photographer Charlie Gray. This partnership supports Small Business Britain's mission to increase female-led businesses from 15% to 30% by 2030. And first order of business is 'Female Founder Fundamentals' - a programme we’re launching early next year to help founders master essential skills for starting and growing their business. Sign up to the programme now: https://lnkd.in/ekQjUJua Video description: Starling and Small Business Britain’s logo and the words ‘Born to run a business’ appear on a light blue background. The video displays multiple videos of women networking, connecting and working on their businesses. It is accompanied by text which is included in the first comment.

We’re adding even more business banking tools to help sole traders and business owners be good with money. One we’re proud to launch is our Making Tax Digital tool, which will land early next year ahead of HMRC’s changes coming in April 2026. We’re the only bank with a proprietary HMRC-recognised tool. And we’re building it with HMRC’s changes in mind. Businesses will be able to manage their digital records, see tax deadlines and file directly to HMRC – all from within their account. Adeel H., Managing Director of SME Banking, said: “We’re always trying to anticipate what our customers will need next. All our new tools will help our customers save time and effort when it comes to looking after their finances.” We’ll also be launching mobile invoicing and new business spending categories soon. Mobile invoicing will let our customers generate invoices from their phones in seconds, whilst spending categories will give customers a better view of their finances.

One small action repeated a thousand times can have a considerable impact. Just like starling birds and the way they come together to form large-scale murmurations, being good with money is the sum of many small habits that have the power to meaningfully impact our financial lives. We worked with bird expert Anne Goodenough to bring to life our namesake bird’s movement as a poetic and attention-grabbing metaphor for our brand platform, brought to London’s busiest stations, in the most true to nature way possible. ✍️ Created by our in-house creative studio alongside The Sunshine Company and visual effects specialists Time Based Arts. • Engine by Starling has signed an agreement to provide our cloud-native banking platform to Tangerine, the award-winning digital bank and wholly-owned subsidiary of Scotiabank, one of the “Big 5” banks in Canada. Tangerine prides itself on being a customer-first, forward-thinking bank delivering innovative everyday banking. This 10-year agreement sets Engine up to support over 2 million Tangerine customers as the bank embarks on an ambitious new phase of growth. Sam Everington, CEO of Engine by Starling, adds: “Engine’s technology and operating model is a tried and tested blueprint for building market-leading digitally-native banks. It is a true fintech success story as we see our software enabling ambitious, innovative and customer-centric banks all over the world. This agreement with Tangerine is a major milestone and the largest deal we have signed to date, showing just how scalable and adaptable Engine is.” Tangerine becomes Engine’s first North American client following the announcement earlier this year of new offices in New York and Toronto and the appointment of Jody Bhagat as North American President to support its global growth.

  • EmbRace, our race and ethnicity network, celebrated Black History Month with events focused on this year's theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride‘. Key highlights included a panel discussion with our Group CEO Raman Bhatia and author Buki Mosaku, “The Bias Navigation Expert” as well as an additional spotlight from Starling business customer Deborah Ajaja, founder of Colour Celebrations . On the theme of Standing Firm in Power and Pride, Deborah said ‘Use your sphere of influence to create lasting impact and always show up as your authentic self, and be proud of it.’ While Buki and Raman, led discussions about unconscious bias and raising it in the workplace. Fostering an environment that encourages people to feel valued and empowered is at the core of Starling's values. We look forward to continuing our work with EmbRace and furthering discussions on topics like unconscious bias in the workplace.

Another first in the UK banking industry: Scam Intelligence. Meet our new Gemini-powered scam-spotting tool that lives in the Starling app. Built in-house and launched yesterday by our CIO Harriet Rees at Money20/20, Scam Intelligence reviews online marketplace listings for customers and flags potential scams. It’s our contribution towards tackling the £1.17bn that fraud costs the UK each year. And the second AI tool we’re putting in the hands of customers to help them build great habits and get good with money. [Visual description: The first screen introduces the Scam Intelligence feature, with onscreen text reading: ‘Meet Scam Intelligence. Our powerful new scam-spotting AI tool to help you check if those power tools, plant pots, golf clubs, headphones are the real deal.’ The next screen shows an example listing for a pair of noise-cancelling headphones on an online marketplace, with the description reading ‘must buy!!’. The price is £50. A screenshot of the listing is taken and the Scam Intelligence results are then displayed, highlighting the potential issues found with the posting, ‘generic photo’, ‘low price’ and ’false urgency’. Next the 3 step process to use Scam Intelligence is described, reading: ‘Upload a screenshot’, ‘Scam Intelligence reviews it’, ‘see any potential red flags.’ The video ends with the text ‘Scam Intelligence. In the Starling app now.’]
