In 2023, I took a call with a kid who had nothing but courage and a wild idea. He was a recent mechanical engineering grad who DM’d me asking if we could chat. He didn’t have a network in tech, didn’t know anyone in SF, and had no clue what the path looked like. He just showed up and asked if I’d talk to him. A couple weeks later, we hopped on the phone. Over the next year, we probably had a dozen calls. He was living in Nebraska at the time, torn between staying in a stable job or leaving everything he knew to chase this idea he couldn’t shake. Every time, our conversations circled back to the same thing: “If you can’t stop thinking about it… that’s your sign. Go all in.” Eventually, I think I convinced him to leave the Midwest and move to SF. He left his job, packed his bags, and moved into a cheap Airbnb in East San Jose because he didn’t know the area at all. No glamor. No safety net. Just belief. A few months later he moved up to SF, plugged into the community, and started building momentum. After two years of calls, we finally met up in SF...full circle moment. (see photo) And here’s the wild part...the startup he wanted to build wasn’t some simple SaaS tool. It was a nuclear reactor that could power thousands of homes with virtually zero waste. True 24/7 carbon-free power. I wasn’t sure if he was crazy or brilliant. Probably a little of both and I definitely told him that on a few occasions. Fast forward to today...Samuel Gibson and Hadron Energy, Inc. just merged in a deal valuing his company at over $1Billion. They’re going public on the Nasdaq in Q1. Stories like this remind me why I always take the call, why I respond to people who reach out, and why I’ll always believe in betting on yourself. Good things take time. And sometimes they start with a DM from someone you’ve never met. Proud of you, Sam. Keep going. The world needs what you’re building. 💙 #startups #entrepreneurship
