  • MaineHealth Cancer Care embraces the spirit of innovation through the adoption of cutting-edge technology that allows care teams to detect and remove potentially cancerous lung nodules, with enhanced precision and shorter hospital stays. Ion robotic bronchoscopy is a powerful new approach which allows care teams to reach locations in a patient’s lung in just a single procedure—both diagnosing and removing the nodule without large incisions. Patients benefit from shorter anesthesia times, less tissue removal, and quicker recovery. Learn more: https://bit.ly/48cigyd

Gratitude at MaineHealth Portland Food Pantry for Community Donations We are grateful for the incredible outpouring of support for the MaineHealth CHI Portland Food Pantry this month. With rising food insecurity in the region, this generosity has made a real difference for the patients and community members we serve. One inspiring example is Abigail Kelley, a Portland resident who decided to take action after learning about the increased need. Wanting to support her community, she organized a food drive in her apartment building on Shepley Street. With the support of her property manager, she researched healthy non-perishable items, encouraged her neighbors to participate and gathered donations. On November 19, she delivered the food to the Portland pantry – and has already said she plans to do it again.  “I wanted to do something for my community. It’s a lot easier to positively impact your community than you think and a lot of people can make a difference,” Abigail shared. Barbara Ginley, Director, Community Health Portland, shared that demand has been higher than ever this month and said, “We are so grateful to community members like Abigail who are supporting the food pantry at this unprecedented time.  Every pound of food or dollar donated, makes a tremendous difference.  This month alone we have received $18,000 and 400 pounds of food. Our supporters are amazing!” Thank you to Abigail, and to all who have contributed to the Maine Medical Center pantry – your support helps us continue this essential work. #FoodSecurity #FoodPantry #HungerRelief #FoodInsecurity

  • Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death, but it doesn’t have to be. In this video, Gary Hochheiser, MD, Director of Thoracic Surgery at MaineHealth, breaks down why early screening is essential, especially for those at high risk. Learn how low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer before symptoms appear, and why the process is simpler and more accessible than you might think. This is just one of the many ways MaineHealth supports our patients through every step of their cancer journey. Learn more at MaineHealth.org/Cancer

  • Thanks to the collective efforts across the system, all 12 MaineHealth facilities earned the 2025 Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, recognizing significant and measurable progress in environmental performance over the last two years. The data reveal several encouraging trends. Energy efficiency projects—such as equipment upgrades and building system improvements—have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2,771 metric tons, that’s equal to eliminating 7 million miles driven by a gasoline-powered car. Sustainability reporting identified an opportunity to reduce anesthetic gas emissions. Over the past two years, a collaboration between Facilities, Sustainability, and Perioperative Services has reduced anesthetic gas emissions by 1,100 tons through targeted process and infrastructure improvements. Solid waste trends show both progress and opportunity. MaineHealth’s composting efforts were strong in 2024, with more than 173 tons of food waste diverted from landfills—helping to reduce methane emissions. On average, 30% of hospital waste is recyclable, and MaineHealth currently recycles about 23% of total waste, indicating room for continued improvement. Additionally, data show a growing opportunity to expand plant-based menu options in cafeterias to improve both community and environmental health outcomes. • At MaineHealth Primary Care Family Medicine Norway, Clinical Supervisor Brianna Walker seated a longtime patient with diabetes in front of a sophisticated new retinal camera. She took images of his eyes that the camera’s AI technology scanned for diabetic retinopathy, a serious condition that can threaten vision. The camera quickly identified early signs of the condition, allowing for timely follow-up and care. “My patient looked at me and said, ‘you might’ve just saved my sight,’” Brianna recalls. “That moment reminded me how powerful this tool really is.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/eKgJNNZV
