Science touches every part of our lives — yet journalists around the world struggle for the space, trust, and resources needed to tell science stories. With shrinking newsrooms, reduced funding, and a fragmenting media ecosystem, reporting on science has never been more challenging. 2023 award winners Andrea Obaid Carrión, Fredrick Mugira, and Yvette Cabrera share firsthand insight into the barriers science journalists are facing. Physical activity is widely recognized as a cornerstone to prevent and treat obesity, but questions remain about the best ways to integrate movement into clinical care and daily life — particularly in light of new GLP-1 medications and other shifts in the obesity management landscape. In July 2025, the National Academies held a workshop to examine best practices for incorporating physical activity into care strategies, developing personalized approaches to physical activity, and better health outcomes tracking.
