  • Yo-Yo Ma wants to know: where’s your favorite place in nature? Inspired by the travels across America that became the “Our Common Nature” podcast, Yo-Yo wants you to get outside and share photos of the places in the natural world where you feel most inspired, most peaceful and most connected to our shared humanity and planet. We want to see them all - expansive shorelines, deepest forests, national parks and your own backyard. Share your photos on social media with the hashtag #ourcommonnature! https://lnkd.in/epqxkh5K

  • “So many people value what public media can give them. In a lot of communities around the United States, public radio is the only local news because local newspapers have failed. It gives people a sense of community, lets them know what’s happening in and around where they live. And so it’s really critical that these stations continue.” – Stephen Colbert to Variety at NYPR’s “Stand with Public Media” Gala Thank you Antonio Ferme for not only covering our gala, but more importantly, the issues at stake for local journalism, freedom of speech, and the future of public media. https://lnkd.in/eAC6ve3w

  • A NIGHT TO REMEMBER! Last night, over 600 of our supporters came together for NYPR’s “Stand With Public Media” Gala, which gave tribute to voices on the front lines of the First Amendment. We celebrated the contributions of comedy legend Stephen Colbert and arts advocate Evelyn McGee Colbert; David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker and host of WNYC’s “The New Yorker Radio Hour”; and Darren Walker, former President of the Ford Foundation. Amid the federal shutdown of the CPB, our leaders and honorees vigorously defended the role of NYPR in providing our community with trusted news, civic conversation, and classical music:  NYPR President & CEO and Executive Chair LaFontaine E. Oliver: “The elimination of federal funding was…meant to bring about an ending…of unbiased journalism…of independent voices…of mission-driven institutions. But if you’ve been listening to the radio lately, you know what we think about that! You can defund public media…you can cancel the grants, zero out the line-item, shut down the CPB. But you can’t defund the truth!” Stephen Colbert: “Wherever we are in the world…[we are] still permanently tuned to WNYC. We make breakfast to 'Morning Edition.’ We make dinner to ‘Marketplace,’ and if we find ourselves brushing our teeth to the sounds of Indian or Indonesian jazz gamelan, we know that's ‘New Sounds’ and we have stayed up past our bedtime.” Evelyn McGee Colbert: “We are so grateful that NYPR continues its mission of fostering curiosity and joy. There are fewer and fewer places where we can all meet outside of work, our home, and for us, NYPR remains that vital third space. It informs us, it entertains us, and it unites us.”  david remnick: “It's a privilege to be in a room filled with people who are so deeply devoted to the free word, to freedom of the press… We cannot kid ourselves about the era that we are living in. This is a test, a test, you could say, of the emergency broadcast system. This is a test of all of us in this room to stand up for what we say that we believe in." Darren Walker: “It is easy…to be depressed, dejected, disgusted, dismayed, by what we are confronted with on a daily basis…we sometimes find ourselves challenged to find hope. And then we come to rooms like this. And we are reminded that there is hope and goodness in this country…if you want America to be great, support institutions like NYPR.” NYPR Board Chair John Rose: “One of the great pleasures of serving on this board has been the opportunity to play a small part in this organization’s sweeping legacy of growth, impact, and dynamism… NYPR has always done things that others wouldn’t think possible. We look at disruption and see opportunity. NYPR isn’t just monitoring threats, we are daring to imagine — as we’ve always done.” We are incredibly grateful to our funders, members, listeners, and friends for their generosity and support. https://lnkd.in/ehnt-njz

  • NYPR President & CEO and Executive Chair LaFontaine E. Oliver sat down with “On the Media’s” Brooke Gladstone for a conversation about the federal shutdown of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, NYPR’s Station-to-Station Programming Project, and the future of the public radio system. The Station-to-Station Programming Project makes all of NYPR’s nationally-distributed programming (including “Radiolab,” “New Yorker Radio Hour,” “Carnegie Hall Live,” and more) free of charge to at-risk fellow public radio stations – allowing them to devote those resources to local news and operations. https://lnkd.in/eJNb7txj

  • NEW: Great insights from WNYC’s Brian Lehrer on CBS News about last night’s final mayoral debate, which he co-moderated. Brian’s take: Curtis Sliwa’s affirmation that he’s staying in the race, despite some calls for him to drop out, is perhaps more impactful than anything that happened on stage.
