Efficiency gets you through the terminal. Story keeps you coming back. The most memorable airports balance both, pairing seamless operations with environments that reflect local culture, inspire connection, and remind travelers where they are in the world. That vision guided the design of Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Concourse A Expansion, where our aviation team, in collaboration with C DESIGN, led Phases 1 and 2 to create a sense of place rooted in Charlotte’s identity. Locally inspired details—storytelling graphics, salvaged components from retired aircraft, and motion-sensor installations—bring the experience of flight to life. “Inspired by the role North Carolina played in the history of aviation, we were struck by the realization that the Concourse A Phase 1 and 2 projects are separated by a distance almost exactly equal to the Wright Brothers’ historic first flight,” says Senior Project Architect Liz Richardson. “It was only fitting that we used this as the inspiration to activate the space connecting the two expansions.” In celebration of #AviationHistoryMonth, explore how CLT’s Concourse A redefines what it means to design for the passenger. • A major step forward for mobility in Greater Montreal! The Deux-Montagnes segment of the Réseau Express Métropolitan (REM) is now open, adding 19 stations and 33 kilometers to this major transportation network. In collaboration with our consortium partners Lemay and Bisson Fortin, we created a consistent station expression from a series of modular components that could be arranged to respond to the unique conditions of each site. The color palette and material selections reflect the local landscape with enough variation to give each stop its own identity—but all share the REM’s distinct architectural language. Our team led the design of 3 of the stations: Côte-de-Liesse, Du Ruisseau, and Canora. Following the South Shore segment opening in 2023, this new segment marks another essential step in one of Canada’s most significant transit projects. Congratulations to everyone involved in this collective effort! Featured Photos: 1-2. Côte-de-Liesse 3-4. Ville-de-Mont-Royal 5-6. • Achieving lower-carbon buildings has become faster, more accurate, and more accessible than ever before. Developed collaboratively by leading think tanks, scientists, architects, and designers, these digital platforms are helping project teams design, measure, and deliver higher-performing environments. 𝐄𝐂3: Developed with Building Transparency, the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator enables benchmarking, assessment, and reduction of supply chain emissions from construction materials. EC3 makes it easy to compare products’ environmental impacts so project teams can make smarter, lower-carbon choices. 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐂𝐀𝐓: The Tally Climate Action Tool integrates Tally, which analyzes whole-building lifecycle impacts from BIM models, with EC3’s environmental product declaration database. This creates one open-access resource. tallyCAT syncs with common design software, helping designers and contractors evaluate materials and track embodied carbon in real time. 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐃: The Simulation Platform for Energy-Efficient Design, developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is a web- and cloud-based energy modeling tool. SPEED enables design teams to assess daylighting, energy use, and operational carbon performance across thousands of models, making it easier to identify and prioritize high-performance solutions. • The heat was on in Miami! We’re proud to share that two of our projects earned major recognition at the 2025 World Architecture Festival—ACCIONA Campus was named a Winner, and School of Fish received a Highly Commended distinction. “This recognition speaks to the brilliance of our design teams and the trusted clients who partner with us to realize architecture that leads the global conversation on the future of the built environment,” says Casey Jones, our chief design officer. 𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳: 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 (𝘓𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦) Designed by our London studio, this corporate headquarters campus in Madrid for ACCIONA reimagines the workplace as a connected ecosystem that supports collaboration, wellbeing, and long-term talent retention. Flexible spaces, natural materials, and strong sustainability strategies set a new standard for high-performing workplace environments. 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥: 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 (𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴) Developed by our Miami studio for a hospitality design competition, the School of Fish imagines a hotel within a carbon-neutral Red Sea development. The concept draws inspiration from the collective movement of a school of fish, translating that idea into a climate-responsive environment shaped by local conditions. • #LetsTalk: Transparency. For architects, transparency is a dynamic filter, a powerful tool used to shape and enhance the user experience of a building and its surroundings. This element manifests in countless ways. Designers can funnel sunlight and frame exterior views through carefully placed glazing, or use a fully transparent facade to make a bold public statement, revealing the life within. It also works internally: layering materials creates shifting shadows and reflections, while elements like glass partitions connect spaces visually while maintaining acoustic separation. When used, #transparency transforms the structure's relationship with its users, shaping the human experience of access, privacy, and connection. It defines what we’re allowed to see, and what we choose to share. Featured Projects: 1. Waldyr Beira Building in São Paulo, Brazil 2. • The conversations at #COP30 underscore architecture’s central role in the climate crisis. For many years, we’ve worked to ensure sustainable and resilient design is the basis for every project, whether it’s a school or a hospital. By rigorously focusing on low-carbon materials, efficient systems, and responsible waste management, we ensure our daily practice meets the highest global expectations. Our Chief Sustainability Officer, Jason McLennan, recently joined Scott Gorenc, Design Principal in our Dallas studio, to discuss what it takes to design truly sustainable airports. “What it requires is a shift in perspective,” Jason says, noting that airports can meet the standards of a fully certified Living Building when we’re willing to rethink what’s possible. • The National Center for Civil and Human Rights expansion is now open! After designing the original museum in 2014, our firm was extremely grateful for the opportunity to help shape this next chapter—an expansion that advances the Center’s mission to inspire a more just and equitable world. The Center has established itself as a vital space where visitors learn, reflect, and engage with the stories that define our collective future. This new phase significantly builds on that legacy, nearly doubling the existing footprint with state-of-the-art classrooms, updated galleries, a café, an outdoor event space, and an immersive family gallery for the next generation of changemakers. Architecturally, the design extends the museum’s iconic, curving form to create a seamless, inviting experience. This intentional continuity encourages guests to visit, stay, and return, ultimately embodying the Center's commitment to deeper dialogue and shared understanding. We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Center. Congratulations to the entire team for bringing this transformational chapter to life.
