𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁’𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀 Every year, thousands of whales are injured or killed by vessel strikes - a preventable threat that endangers marine ecosystems and maritime safety alike. As global shipping increases, so does the risk in critical whale habitats and migration routes. The OCEAN Navigation Awareness Project, a joint EU and UK initiative, is tackling this challenge by combining hydroacoustic sensing with AI to help vessels hear and avoid whales in real time. Through collaboration between scientists, technology providers, and maritime operators, the project has reached an impressive Technology Readiness Level 7, demonstrating its system in real-world conditions. By connecting Teledyne RESON hydrophones to navigational networks, ships can now receive instant alerts when whales are nearby - allowing crews to adjust speed or course to avoid harm. It’s a powerful example of how innovation and collaboration can make our oceans safer for both wildlife and people. We are pleased to announce a successful Factory and Harbour Acceptance Trials of the new Osprey AUV in Reykjavik. This 2,000-meter depth-rated underwater vehicle will soon enable high-resolution seafloor and water column mapping aboard the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse.
🎉𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐙 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 New AUV (underwater drone) for the Netherlands marine research community successfully passed her Factory and Harbour Acceptance Trials at Teledyne Marine in Reykjavik. This 2000-meter depth rated Autonomous Underwater Vehicle of the Osprey model is being built by the Icelandic company Teledyne Gavia and will become available by mid-2026 for use on the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse. Unlike the gliders, the AUV has its own propulsion and can be programmed to scan the sea floor and water column. The autonomously operating device will make be capable of high-resolution visualization of the sea floor. To facilitate highly detailed research in ocean waters over longer periods, NIOZ is acquiring autonomous and remote-controlled equipment for the Dutch marine research community. This advanced research equipment is funded via NWO-GWI funding for large-scale scientific infrastructure. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘂𝘀: 𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗗𝗖𝗣 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 Workhorse Proteus, the latest ADCP from Teledyne Marine, is redefining how academic researchers study ocean currents, waves, and turbulence. With its advanced sonar platform and compact design, Proteus delivers high-resolution data with minimal setup - perfect for fieldwork, student projects, and long-term deployments. Here’s why it’s a top choice for the academic community: 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Enables direct measurement of vertical water movement - critical for studying sediment transport, biological processes, and turbulence. 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀𝗲: No need to be an ADCP expert to configure deployments. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: The ADSP and Catalyst Processor allow researchers to capture data across spatial and temporal scales - ideal for dynamic environments like estuaries and coastal zones. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 & 𝗔𝗨𝗩-𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲: Its small form factor fits gliders, AUVs, and tight mooring setups, expanding deployment options without sacrificing data quality. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆: Supported by 20 degree beam angles, AHRS with dynamic tilt measurement, and simultaneous sampling of all slanted beams. Proteus isn’t just an upgrade - it’s a research enabler. By simplifying deployment and enhancing data fidelity, it helps academics focus on discovery, not device management.
