About us
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

“𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗶”: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 “𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿” In Brazzaville, Jocelyne Mpila helps children under three learn through play, encourages participation with warmth, and supports shy children with quiet reassurance. “I chose this job wholeheartedly,” she says. “Working with children is truly my vocation.” Once registered in the Unique Social Registry (RSU) — a system supported by the World Bank to assist vulnerable populations — Jocelyne came from a modest family and supported herself through a small local business. In 2024, she joined the PSIPJ project and completed a three-month training program with MEDRAC Africa, covering play-based learning, business management, first aid, fire safety, and child protection. Despite being seven months pregnant and facing health challenges, she finished her training, completed a one-month internship, and earned her official certificate. Today, Jocelyne works as a trained Mama Mobokoli at the Soukissa market nursery, opened in July 2025. Affordable rates and quality care quickly drew families in: by mid-October, Soukissa had 39 children, surpassing its projected 36, while a second nursery at Bacongo’s Total market reached 65, exceeding its 60-child target. “𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱,” says Barth Oko, Project Manager at MEDRAC Africa. Ambitious and determined, Jocelyne is now planning to expand the Soukissa nursery, and dreams of opening her own.
