The Agile Manifesto begins with the words, "We are discovering improved methods for software development." So it's pretty clear that the first members of the Agile Alliance were thinking about software. But things have changed a lot in the last few decades. One of the most significant changes was in 2003 with the emergence of lean software development. This connected the idea of a lean thinking to the Agile community. Remember that lean thinking is about optimizing the process and eliminating waste. It got a start in manufacturing to help efficiently produce goods that closely match the customer's needs. Lean thinking got the Agile community to think bigger. It wasn't just about developing software, but it became a new way to think about working.
