- When you have a lot of data and you need to be able to search and report on it, you'll want to look at a big data store. One of the more popular services AWS has for this is called Redshift. Now, before we get too far into big data, there's some terms that we need to sort out first. The first big data term we'll cover is data lakes. A data lake is like an old cobbler who has tracked every shoe order repair they've ever done by placing the completed work ticket in a shoe box underneath the counter. And after 50 years of being in business, now has an entire backroom filled with shoe boxes. Just imagine how much effort it would take to find out how many red boots the cobbler has ever repaired. Data lakes are unstructured data. And are usually stored as raw text data, maybe as comma delimited files, and are usually very large.
