The standards manual, part 1

- Now that you've completed the enormous task of determining a brand strategy and designing a brand identity and visual system, it's time to create the standards manual. A standards manual is a set of instructions. It lets the user know how to design using your identity system. These exist to maintain consistency over time. Without this, your system will slowly erode when used by others. One designer may decide to add colors or change them entirely. Another might decide Garamond is a much better choice than the Helvetica you selected. Very quickly, all the efforts of maintaining a clear brand message have disappeared. Bad standards manuals are a list of negatives. Don't do this, don't do that, and so on. The better ones reinforce positive choices for the system. Back in the days before the digital revolution, standards manuals were giant, clunky, and complicated manuals. They had hundreds of pages that provided rules…
