- We spent some time talking about the operating system and its functions. Now we'll explore how you can have multiple operating system environments in one computer. Imagine you need to run a particular software application, and it will not run on your host machine's operating system. This can happen with different versions of software applications, but what can you do? Do you need to go and purchase a new computer with that particular operating system? No, you don't. Luckily, you can rely on virtualization. Virtualization allows us a tremendous amount of flexibility. We can take our main computer, the host machine, running a host operating system, and install what is known as a hypervisor. Then we can install a guest operating system and software applications we need right inside of the host machine. It's like having a computer inside of your computer.
