- Most households today are going wireless, with 802.11ac or ax Wi-Fi. They choose wireless over wired because it's less expensive, easier to install, and supports all of their computing devices, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and even home automation. So, let's discuss 802.11. First, 802.11 is a standard, and standards vary depending on the router that you get. Ideally, you want the newest. That way you can get what you know is right now what's modern, right? And right now it's 802.11ax, also known as Wi-Fi 6. However, older standards like 802.11bg and n are more flexible with older devices. 802.11a and ac is far better for gaming and video streaming and still provides decent connection to older devices. So, now that we have either purchased or were provided a new SOHO, or small home office router, that will connect our cable connection to our devices in our home, this will allow the LAN devices to get out onto the internet.
