Dealing with deep disagreements

- Are you an argument optimist or pessimist? Argument optimists assume that if you look hard enough, there's common ground to be found in every disagreement. Argument pessimists think there's rarely any common ground in people who disagree deeply. And the best way forward is to not engage or defeat an opponent with persuasion. I'm an argument optimist. Maybe there's an agreement that you're dealing with a thorny issue or that you both want what's best for those you care about. Whatever it is. If you're both willing to dig deep enough, you will reach common ground and your deep disagreements won't prevent productive communication. My friends Ronette and Giaum often disagree deeply. Giaum says they argue because they care. They welcome new information that deepens their understanding and they're open to changing their minds.
