Excel conditional formatting color scales are a useful tool for creating heat maps, allowing you to quickly identify patterns and trends in large data sets. In this video, we'll apply color scales to highlight the relative values of cells within a range. Taking this example of student test data, which is a sea of numbers, makes hard work for the teacher to quickly identify and focus on students who are below average. I'll select the data containing the text scores and then on the Home tab, Conditional Formatting, Color Scales. Hovering over the color scales gives me a preview. I'm going to stick with this traditional green, yellow, red color scale. And now I can instantly focus on the below average students as their test scores are shaded in red. And if I sort the data, select it, data tab, sort. Let's sort it based on the average test score from smallest to largest. It's now even easier to use.
