Three magic questions for task assignment
- Whether the issue is team or individual accountability, clear task assignment is critically important. We can't blame others for not completing tasks correctly and on time if we aren't precise when assigning them, right? But this happens all the time. We think the task assignment was clear, but oftentimes it's not until the deliverable is due that we realize that we weren't on the same page at all. To avoid this, I recommend a technique called the three magic questions. It's helpful as a delegation tool for many leadership situations. These questions are my insurance policy, if you will, helping to ensure that I've been clear and specific with task assignments. Here's how it works. When I'm working with someone I've not worked with previously, or when I'm assigning tasks that are particularly important or prone to confusion or misunderstanding, I'll ask these three questions after assigning a task.
