Welcome to Raspberry Pi essential training

- Hi, my name's Liz and I'm one of the founders of Raspberry Pi. So I started the company with my husband about 13 years ago on our kitchen table and took it to the stock exchange in London in 2024. I left the company then I'm not fit for a public company and set up on my own as a consultant and an investor. This course is for people who are absolute beginners to Raspberry Pi, and I'm hoping by the end of it that you'll have just a little bit of everything. You'll know how to use your Raspberry Pi to do word processing, spreadsheets, that sort of thing. You'll be able to use it to play music and video. You'll even do a little bit of electronics and a little bit of programming, just a tiny amount. So I'm hoping you'll have enough confidence that you'll be able to go away and do some more later. The videos in this course are short and they're quite simple. You'll be able to follow along. There'll be text at the bottom of the screen if you need to type anything in, and you can always go back to the beginning and start again if you get stuck with something. One thing I really do want to get across here is that this thing is not intimidating. It is just a computer. It's the same sort of thing you've got inside your laptop, same sort of thing you interact with a million times daily. It's just slightly different form factor and maybe a little greener and spikier. You don't need any special knowledge at all to do this course. I mean, it's helpful if you know your way around a keyboard, but that's about it. And if you know which end of the plug is the socket and which end goes on the wall, that's also helpful. But really that's all you need. You'll learn some very, very basic material about programming in Python and basic electronics on this course. And if you want to learn more, there are some more courses here that will help you. If you've chosen to do this course, you might well know this already, but there are Raspberry Pi's everywhere. There are about 70 million of them out in the world at the moment. They're everywhere from offices to factories, schools. If you take a train in the UK in the morning and you use a phone on the gate, there's a Raspberry Pi in there reading it. If you go down the street and you're looking at digital signage, it's probably got a Raspberry Pi behind it. So I'm really, really glad you're joining me here and let's crack on.
