- [Narrator] If you are making a payment transaction where the purchase is completed by physically presenting a payment method, which could be a payment card or a mobile wallet, and that method is being physically processed by the merchant terminal, that's known as a card present transaction, even if there is no card present. Odd, I know. It's a legacy expression and possibly more clearly defined as payment device present. If you need to have some sort of payment method on you at the time of purchase when you're at the merchant, then it is a card present transaction. But what if you're paying for something in a store using the store's mobile app, like a cup of coffee, that's possibly a card not present transaction if you don't have to physically present your payment method at the time of purchase to the merchant.
