What's on a card and why

- [Instructor] I want to talk a little about the actual card you may have in your wallet. So what's on a card? Remember, we are talking credit and debit cards here, which we will collectively refer to as payment cards. Not card such as store account cards that can only be used for purchases at one store. The primary account number or PAN is the number on the card identifying the associated account. This is usually 15 or 16 digits long. The PAN is one of the most important expressions used when we're talking about safeguarding credit card data, and I'm going to use the term a lot during this course. There's also an expiration date. The card isn't good once this date has passed. There's a chip, and we'll talk more about this in a minute. There are also usually some images, and perhaps a hologram to provide some guide of authenticity, but neither of these things matter in the payment flow.
