When the city of Newport, Oregon needed to upgrade their wastewater facility to keep up with an increase in population and tourism, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS was there to help. As a temporary solution, a pair of 25 hp parallel shaft gear motors with NORDAC PRO SK 500P variable frequency drives were initially provided to get the aerators running at full capacity and prove the direct drive concept would work as promised. For the project's second phase, upgrading the entire facility, NORD provided 6 additional drive systems. This complete solution keeps maintenance to a minimum in the extreme Pacific Northwest environment by including oil reservoirs and eliminating belts, sheaves, or pulleys, additionally increasing operator safety. The new gear motors were additionally proven to be 12% more energy-efficient than the legacy units, saving the facility over $30,000 annually and increasing aeration capability by more than 50%.
