UCLA Health gets $20M for lung health center

To paraphrase advice once given to me by Prof. Sir Andy Florence, the road to lung health begins with knowing where you are, then setting sights on where you want to go. In modern medicine this means accessing all possible biomarkers that describe the status of your lungs as early as possible, and as frequently as necessary: respiratory symptoms, breath flow rates, lung acoustics, chest imaging, exhaled gasses and volatile organics, airway lining fluid microorganisms, particulates, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, oligosaccharides, and metabolites. September is Pulmonary Fibrosis Month - a month for shining a spotlight on a devastating lung disease affecting over 70,000 people in the UK 🫁 PF Awareness Month 2025 amplifies patient voices through stories, community events and fundraising challenges. Here at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, the Research and Development department support research into this debilitating condition in the hopes of improving treatment and care for all patients who live with PF. Research Nurses Rosenddelle and Kerry have almost ten years of experience working in respiratory research between them. Kerry states that the work is valuable as it has expanded her knowledge of chronic respiratory disease, as well as increased her awareness of the impact it has on people's quality of life. Rose says that it has been a “deeply enriching” experience. She says how “fulfilling it is to be part of a team that is not only providing care but also actively advocating for the development of new treatments. I feel grateful to contribute to a field where we can make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives.” Rose also explains why respiratory research is so important: “Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) affects tens of thousands of people in the UK. The disease carries a high symptom burden and, currently, treatment options remain limited. Morbidity and mortality rates are significant. This makes continued research in PF not just valuable, but essential. It helps to raise awareness about the severity and impact of the disease as well as driving the development of new treatments which aim to improve patients’ quality of life while also reducing mortality.
