BT believe they are on track to complete their 5G rollout years faster than VodafoneThree, for several reasons: The spectrum being used by VodafoneThree (3.5GHz TDD) means they have to operate a larger network than BT, which means more sites to install and update. VodafoneThree is looking to replace Huawei, Ericsson and Samsung, in contrast, BT plans to only remove Huawei equipment. For national coverage, VodafoneThree is reliant on its site-sharing Beacon joint venture with VMO2, which means it is constrained by the investment plans of its network sharing partner. In contrast EE (the mobile arm of BT) will be the first European telco to invest in a new generation of massive MIMO radios from Ericsson, where the new infrastructure can deliver up to four times the uplink capacity of their predecessors.   What does this all mean? BT/EE completing its 5G rollout sooner means that jobs linked to network deployment (such as site engineering, construction, and installation) will peak earlier and taper off sooner. Meanwhile VodafoneThree’s network will take longer to build (due to replacing multiple vendors and needing more sites), deployment jobs will last longer.
