If you zoom out to about 50% and squint your eyes, does it look like just a wall of text? 😬 Because that's what a recruiter sees in the first nanoseconds of reviewing your resume (if it even gets past the AI robots.) Here are a few tips to help break things up a bit and make your resume more inviting to actually read: 🔢 Add numbers. Actual digits. Even start a bullet point with them. It visually catches the eye and gives the reader something to get excited about. >> Struggling to attach numbers to your achievements? Start with what's in the job description. It asks for 5+ years of XYZ experience? The first thing in your summary should be "7+ years XYZ experience". Or, if it speaks to growth, impact or change as an important requirement, try highlighting a percentage. Say you were a manager starting with 2 direct reports and increased to 5, you can write "Grew XYZ team by 150% in 3 years." 👬 Use Mirroring. Adjust the bullet points in your resume, or your skills section, to mirror the flow of the qualifications/about you/must-have section of the job post. >> Make it easy for the recruiter to easily see you meet their requirements, so they can check off their boxes and send you along to the hiring manager. Also, yes, you should be editing your resume for every application. Tools like Teal make it really easy. 📰 Split sections. Just like a newspaper changes font size, column width, and word density, often using lines or callout boxes to assist, break up your content visually to create flow and emphasis. >> But be cautious here. Resumes are all about using your real estate on the page wisely, so don't create lots of bulky section splits or tricky spacing that leaves lots of white space.
