Let's break it down: 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 ▪️Cardholder & Browser/App ▪️Merchant & Their 3DS Server ▪️Card Networks (Directory Server) ▪️Issuing Bank (ACS - Access Control Server) ▪️3DS Server Providers 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽-𝗯𝘆-𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 1️⃣ The journey begins when a cardholder initiates a purchase. The merchant's system collects device data, shopping behavior, and transaction details to create a rich 3DS authentication request. 2️⃣ The merchant's 3DS server formats this data into a standard protocol message and routes it through the card network's directory server, which acts like a traffic controller. 3️⃣ The directory server identifies the issuing bank and forwards the authentication request to the bank's Access Control Server (ACS). 4️⃣ This is where it gets interesting - the ACS performs real-time risk assessment using: 🔹Device fingerprinting 🔹Behavioral biometrics 🔹Transaction history 🔹Location data 🔹Merchant risk profiles 5️⃣ Based on this assessment, one of two paths occurs: ▪️Frictionless Flow → If the risk is low, the ACS returns an immediate authentication approval.
