⏱️ How To Measure UX (https://lnkd.in/e5ueDtZY), a practical guide on how to use UX benchmarking, SUS, SUPR-Q, UMUX-LITE, CES, UEQ to eliminate bias and gather statistically reliable results — with useful templates and resources. By Roman Videnov. Measuring UX is mostly about showing cause and effect. Of course, management wants to do more of what has already worked — and it typically wants to see ROI > 5%. But the return is more than just increased revenue. It’s also reduced costs, expenses and mitigated risk. And UX is an incredibly affordable yet impactful way to achieve it. Good design decisions are intentional. They aren’t guesses or personal preferences. They are deliberate and measurable. Over the last years, I’ve been setting ups design KPIs in teams to inform and guide design decisions. Here are some examples: 1. Top tasks success > 80% (for critical tasks) 2. Time to complete top tasks < 60s (for critical tasks) 3. Time to first success < 90s (for onboarding) 4. Time to candidates < 120s (nav + filtering in eCommerce) 5. Time to top candidate < 120s (for feature comparison) 6. Time to hit the limit of free tier < 7d (for upgrades) 7. Presets/templates usage > 80% per user (to boost efficiency) 8. Filters used per session > 5 per user (quality of filtering) 9. Feature adoption rate > 80% (usage of a new feature per user) 10. Time to pricing quote < 2 weeks (for B2B systems) 11. Application processing time < 2 weeks (online banking) 12. Default settings correction < 10% (quality of defaults) 13. Search results quality > 80% (for top 100 most popular queries) 14. Service desk inquiries < 35/week (poor design → more inquiries) 15. Form input accuracy ≈ 100% (user input in forms) 16. Time to final price < 45s (for eCommerce) 17. Password recovery frequency < 5% per user (for auth) 18. Fake email frequency < 2% (for email newsletters) 19. First contact resolution < 85% (quality of service desk replies) 20. “Turn-around” score < 1 week (frustrated users → happy users) 21. Environmental impact < 0.3g/page request (sustainability) 22. Frustration score < 5% (AUS + SUS/SUPR-Q + Lighthouse) 23. System Usability Scale > 75 (overall usability) 24. Accessible Usability Scale (AUS) > 75 (accessibility) 25. Core Web Vitals ≈ 100% (performance) Each team works with 3–4 local design KPIs that reflects the impact of their work, and 3–4 global design KPIs mapped against touchpoints in a customer journey. Search team works with search quality score, onboarding team works with time to success, authentication team works with password recovery rate. What gets measured, gets better. And it gives you the data you need to monitor and visualize the impact of your design work. Once it becomes a second nature of your process, not only will you have an easier time for getting buy-in, but also build enough trust to boost UX in a company with low UX maturity. 4 out of 5 CRO agencies I've worked with usually relied on 'best practices' to increase conversion rate. These practices include: - Adding badges like 'few left', 'bestseller' - Making reviews more prominent - Creating urgency with timers - Adding key product USPs - Leveraging offers While these strategies do give results, many tend to overlook a critical aspect. Which is UX/UI design. That’s likely the least spoken topic at a CRO agency. Despite its significant potential to increase conversion rates. In this example, using Nourish You India's PDP, I've implemented UX/UI and other changes that can increase conversion rates. Below are the 8 changes I recommend a/b testing - 1. Move the product name above the product image along with reviews+price. That way, the space between the images and the add-to-cart CTA is reduced, increasing the chances of adding to cart. 2. The primary product image should highlight key USPs. This would help the user to quickly understand why to buy this product and why from you. 3. Consider adding product image thumbnails. If your product requires education then use the image slider to provide that. Most important in consumables, personal care industry, and tech. 4. Consider adding 3 quick bullet points or USPs about the product before the user goes to add to cart. This way, they are educated about the product before they consciously think about purchasing from you. 5. Motivate users to add more quantity, increasing the AOV. Do this by highlighting savings when they buy in bulk or highlighting the cost per item if they buy a bundle. 6. Optimize the area around the add-to-cart CTA. Highlight the estimated delivery time, free shipping threshold and return policy. 7. Highlight key USPs to differentiate your product and brand from the others. 8. Add accordions that the user can click on to read more. This way they can find the answers to their questions quickly. Other 2 CRO changes I did: 1. Added 'Few left' once the user selected the pack they want to buy. This creates urgency. 2. Re-iterated price near the pack selection so the user doesn't have to scroll back up to see the price. 👀 Lessons from the Most Surprising A/B Test Wins of 2024 📈 Reflecting on 2024, here are three surprising A/B test case studies that show how experimentation can challenge conventional wisdom and drive conversions: 1️⃣ Social proof gone wrong: an eCommerce story 🔬 The test: An eCommerce retailer added a prominent "1,200+ Customers Love This Product!" banner to their product pages, thinking that highlighting the popularity of items would drive more purchases. ✅ The result: The variant with social proof banner underperformed by 7.5%! 💡 Why It Didn't Work: While social proof is often a conversion booster, the wording may have created skepticism or users may have seen the banner as hype rather than valuable information. 🧠 Takeaway: By removing the banner, the page felt more authentic and less salesy. ⚡ Test idea: Test removing social proof; overuse can backfire making users question the credibility of your claims. 2️⃣ "Ugly" design outperforms sleek 🔬 The test: An enterprise IT firm tested a sleek, modern landing page against a more "boring," text-heavy alternative. ✅ The Result: The boring design won by 9.8% because it was more user friendly. 💡 Why It Worked: The plain design aligned better with users needs and expectations. 🧠 Takeaway: Think function over flair. This test serves as a reminder that a "beautiful" design doesn’t always win—it’s about matching the design to your audience's needs. ⚡ Test idea: Test functional designs of your pages to see if clarity and focus drive better results. 3️⃣ Microcopy magic: a SaaS example 🔬 The test: A SaaS platform tested two versions of their primary call-to-action (CTA) button on their main product page. "Get Started" vs. "Watch a Demo". ✅ The result: "Watch a Demo" achieved a 74.73% lift in CTR. 💡 Why It Worked: The more concrete, instructive CTA clarified the action and benefit of taking action. 🧠 Takeaway: Align wording with user needs to clarify the process and make taking action feel less intimidating. ⚡ Test idea: Test your copy. Small changes can make a big difference by reducing friction or perceived risk. 🔑 Key takeaways ✅ Challenge assumptions: Just because a design is flashy doesn’t mean it will work for your audience. Always test alternatives, even if they seem boring. ✅ Understand your audience: Dig deeper into your users' needs, fears, and motivations. A/B test math interpretation - I love stuff like this: Two members of our team (Fletcher Ehlers and Marie-Louise Brunet) - ran a test recently that decreased click-through rate (CTR) by over 10% - they added a warning telling users they’d need to log in if they clicked. However - instead of hurting conversions like you’d think, it actually increased them. As in - Fewer users clicked through, but overall, more users ended up finishing the flow. Why? Selection bias & signal vs. noise. By adding friction, we filtered out low-intent users—those who would have clicked but bounced at the next step. The ones who still clicked knew what they were getting into, making them far more likely to convert. Fewer clicks, but higher quality clicks. Here's a visual representation of the A/B test results. You can see how the click-through rate (CTR) dropped after adding friction (fewer clicks), but the total number of conversions increased. This highlights the power of understanding selection bias—removing low-intent users improved the quality of clicks, leading to better overall results.

Publisher experiments fail when they start with tactics, not hypotheses. A/B testing has become a staple in digital publishing, but for many publishers, it’s little more than tinkering with headlines, button colours, or send times. The problem is that these tests often start with what to change rather than why to change it. Without a clear, measurable hypothesis, most experiments end up producing inconclusive results or chasing vanity wins that don’t move the business forward. Top-performing publishers approach testing like scientists: They identify a friction point, build a hypothesis around audience behaviour, and run the experiment long enough to gather statistically valid results. They don’t test for the sake of testing; they test to solve specific problems that impact retention, conversions, or revenue. 3 experiments that worked, and why 1. Content depth vs. breadth: Instead of spreading efforts across many topics, one publisher focused on fewer topics in greater depth. This depth-driven strategy boosted engagement and conversions because it directly supported the business goal of increasing loyal readership, and the test ran long enough to remove seasonal or one-off anomalies. 2. Paywall trigger psychology: Rather than limiting readers to a fixed number of free articles, an engagement-triggered paywall is activated after 45 seconds of reading. This targeted high-intent users, converting 38% compared to just 8% for a monthly article meter, resulting in 3x subscription revenue. 3. Newsletter timing by content type: A straight “send time” test (9 AM vs. 5 PM) produced negligible differences. The breakthrough came from matching content type to reader routines: morning briefings for early risers, deep-dive reads for the afternoon. Open rates increased by 22%, resulting in downstream gains in on-site engagement. Why most tests fail • No behavioural hypothesis, e.g., “testing headlines” without asking why a reader would care • No segmentation - treating all users as if they behave the same • Vanity metrics over meaningful metrics - clicks instead of conversions or LTV • Short timelines - stopping before 95% statistical confidence or a full behaviour cycle What top performers do differently ✅ Start with a measurable hypothesis tied to business outcomes ✅ Isolate one behavioural variable at a time ✅ Segment audiences by actions (new vs. returning, skimmers vs. engaged) ✅ Measure real results - retention, conversions, revenue ✅ Run tests for at least 14 days or until reaching statistical significance ✅ Document learnings to inform the next test When experiments are designed with intention, they stop being random guesswork and start becoming a repeatable growth engine. It provides a holistic view of the UX by considering both qualitative & quantitative metrics. HEART stands for ✅ Happiness: How satisfied users are with using your product. It can be measured through surveys and ratings (quantitative) and reviews and user interviews (qualitative). Tracking happiness is right when you analyze the general performance of your product. ✅ Engagement: How actively users are interacting with the product. This includes metrics like the number of visits, time spent on the product, frequency of interactions, and the depth of interactions (e.g., the number of features used). Analyzing engagement will help you understand how compelling & valuable the product is to users. ✅ Adoption: How effectively the product attracts new users and converts them into active users. Key metrics include user sign-ups, onboarding completion rates, and activation rates (e.g., the percentage of users who perform a key action after signing up). Understanding adoption helps identify barriers during product onboarding. ✅ Retention: How well the product retains its users over time. It focuses on reducing churn and keeping users engaged over the long term. Metrics like retention rate and cohort analysis are used to measure retention. Improving retention involves addressing pain points, providing ongoing value, and fostering a sense of loyalty among users. ✅ Task success: How effectively users can accomplish their goals or tasks using the product. This includes metrics like task completion rate, error rate, and time to complete tasks. User journey mapping, user interviews, and usability testing can help identify usability issues and optimize the user flow to enhance task success. ❗ Top 3 mistakes when using HEART 1️⃣ Placing too much emphasis on quantitative metrics at the expense of qualitative insights.
