I miss brainstorming most!   When I worked in an office every day, I would frequently ‘annoy’ people sitting near me to ask them to sense check an idea or a text I was writing.   It’s much much harder to do that on MS Teams. In an office, I can usually tell if someone is really busy and shouldn’t be interrupted, or whether they are looking for a similar distraction. And that means that my idea-quality has been a little less consistent…   But I’ve spent this morning working on a digital whiteboard (Mural, if you must know!). It’s been revolutionary – genuinely. I’ve managed to tap into the collective wisdom of our amazing team Country Navigator, sharing comments and expanding ideas.   But the real change came when we started using whiteboards in our virtual training sessions. If you’ve ever delivered training, you know there are some people who just don’t speak up. Either shy or lacking confidence or worried that their idea might be controversial.   When we use whiteboards, contributions are anonymous so learners can put anything forward without worrying that they will be thought stupid. And it’s really increased engagement in our sessions. Whiteboards are so easy to use and they provide a great lasting record of the session – we find that people come back to the whiteboards after the sessions and continue the conversation.   From a cultural intelligence perspective, it gives people the freedom to react in a style that they want to, rather than being constrained by the expectations of others. It amplifies quiet or silent voices and every idea is equal, without the weight of expectation or a hierarchical label. In our hybrid world, we have to find new ways to collaborate and share ideas.
