ODI partners with state departments to build the tools & processes they need to provide equitable & exceptional services

About us

The California Office of Data and Innovation (ODI) is dedicated to improving digital experiences for all Californians. ODI uses people-centered design and technology to reimagine and deliver equitable, effective services to Californians. We bring empathy, curiosity, data, technology, and a host of other tools to identifying problems. We directly engage with Californians to understand their needs, challenges, and expectations. And we work with state agencies and departments to reimagine the processes, policies, and technology systems that problems are rooted in. Our focus is on creating and delivering lasting change, not just quick fixes. We’re looking for team members who are deeply excited about making California government work better. We’re a remote-first team with staff all over the state and offices in the historic train station in downtown Sacramento.

  • 🗣️ “Engaged California demonstrates how we can use AI to facilitate rather than fracture—turning raw input into actionable, co-created policy.” -Audrey Tang, the first digital minister of Taiwan, global expert and Engaged California advisor Engaged California, designed and led by the Office of Data and Innovation (ODI), was featured in a commentary piece from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace written by Micah Weinberg. Carnegie highlights Engaged California as a leading example of how government can build engagement that is timely, civil, and backed by solid data and analysis, especially in times of crisis. This piece also details how ODI built a structured way for LA fire survivors to share their priorities in real time, then used human-centered methods and AI-enabled synthesis to turn thousands of individual stories into policy-ready insights. Using this approach will help state leaders make faster, more grounded decisions that strengthen the connection between communities and their government. 💙 We’re thankful for a strong partnership with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and for elevating the importance of meaningful public engagement. 🔗 If you want to learn about the top priorities of Engaged California participants, read our report: https://bit.ly/3M70GUV 🔗 And explore Carnegie’s full analysis of Engaged California here: https://lnkd.in/gz5AgkBd

  • 🎤 You spoke. We listened. For six months, Angelenos affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires shared what mattered most as they rebuild their communities. Participants came together through Engaged California, a first-in-the-nation deliberative democracy platform. They helped create an action plan to rebuild. Fire survivors told us their top priorities: ➡️ Utilities: burying power lines to prevent ignitions ➡️Water: upgrading water systems to improve capacity and hydrant availability ➡️Communications: strengthening communication systems to ensure reliable connections even when networks fail ➡️Financial support: making financial support easier to navigate so people can quickly find the help they need ➡️Permitting: streamlining permitting to provide fast, hands-on guidance These priorities will help guide state and local governments as they set recovery efforts in motion. 💙 Thank you so much for sharing your voice. Your participation made this possible. 🔗 To learn more about the top priorities survivors shared, visit https://bit.ly/4idDUGZ Audrey Tang Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Berggruen Institute
