🚨Meet the 2025 Zoo & Aquarium Professional Troublemakers of the Year 🚨 Good trouble is everywhere. The scope and scale of this year’s nominations made that clear. The tide is rising. The Professional Troublemaker program - a partnership of TESSERE and SSA Group - was created to celebrate and encourage bold, transformative leadership within zoos and aquariums. Nominations came from every corner – non-profit founders, educators, animal care professionals, social scientists, CEOs. Proof that transformative leadership lives in anyone bold enough to ask why and what if, take risks, and push for change that matters. And something that sets them apart – good troublemakers don’t go it alone. They pull others in. They lift people up. They lead with empathy, conviction, and the grit it takes to rattle the system. That’s what we saw in this year’s honorees. Each was nominated by peers and reviewed by a committee of five ECHO25 conference attendees using a rubric grounded in curiosity, courage, collaboration, and impact. Please join us in celebrating - ✨ Emerging Professional Troublemaker of the Year Jennie Dee Janssen – Assistant Curator at National Aquarium + co-founder of Minorities in Aquarium and Zoo Science (MIAZS) – for sparking a grassroots movement that challenges systemic inequities, builds community, and positions diversity as a scientific necessity. ✨ Professional Troublemaker of the Year Nik Dehejia – CEO of Oakland Zoo – for fearless, justice-driven leadership that pushes zoos to show up differently: tackling wildlife trafficking head-on, embedding DEAI across the organization, and creating space for collective learning that strengthens both communities and wildlife. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 See comments for more from Nik & Jennie's nomination letters. Both Jennie and Nik embody what it means to make good trouble - shaking foundations to build a future where people and wildlife thrive together. Now it’s your turn – what trouble are you willing to make for good?

  • The guest experience landscape is shifting. Expectations are rising, attention is shortening, and visitors are seeking something deeper than convenience alone. They want connection. They want meaning. They want to feel cared for. And increasingly, they want to know their experience is aligned with a more sustainable future.   In a recent episode of The Attractions Group Podcast, David Rosenberg, Executive Vice President of Growth and Experience at SSA Group, spoke to a truth we see every day inside cultural attractions: hospitality is no longer a service category. It is a mission strategy.   At 452 Hospitality, this belief sits at the center of everything we do, creating moments of care that strengthen our partners’ missions and support a more sustainable guest experience.
