Questions and answers - Frequently asked questions
In the future, it will be possible to obtain a QR code during the registration of your vehicle on site or online in order to add a digital vehicle registration document. This is an additional feature that is currently in development. We therefore ask you to refrain from making any inquiries with your local registration authority.
If you change your device, your data will not be transferred to the app. After installing the app on the new device, please start adding your digital vehicle registration document there. Successfully adding the digital vehicle registration document on the new device will automatically disable it on the old device. Please note that redistributed copies of your digital vehicle registration document will also be automatically withdrawn and you will have to redistribute them again.
Not all functions of the app are available offline. A digital vehicle registration document that has already been added can be displayed and the data viewed. However, it is not possible to add a new digital vehicle registration document, pass on a digital vehicle registration document for sharing or delete an existing digital vehicle registration document.
There are different ways to add the digital vehicle registration document in the app. Start with "Add document" on the homepage of the app, then you will be guided through the process. If the vehicle is registered to you, you can download the digital vehicle registration document with the help of the online ID function of your ID card. In the future, it will be possible to obtain a QR code during the registration of your vehicle on site or online, which you can use to download a digital vehicle registration document. In addition, it is also possible to obtain a shared digital vehicle registration document if it has already been downloaded by another person. The person who has already downloaded the vehicle registration document into their app may pass on a shared version from app to app or online.
You can share a your digital vehicle registration document using the app. To do this, go to the digital vehicle registration document for which you want to share and select "Share vehicle registration document". The app guides you through the process. You can optionally set a time limit and choose between two types of sharing: For on-site sharing, the app creates a QR code that the other person must scan with their app in order to download the shared vehicle registration document. For online sharing, the app creates a link that you can send to the other person. Please note that both variants can only be used to download exactly one copy. To share another vehicle registration document, you'll need to restart the process.
No, if you have received a digital vehicle registration document from someone else, you will not be able to pass it on. Only the person who originally downloaded the digital vehicle registration document may pass it on.
To delete a digital vehicle registration document from the app, first go to the vehicle which you would like to delete. All the information on your vehicle will appear. At the top right is the "Edit" field. Click on this to delete the vehicle registration document in the next step. After you confirm some security questions, the digital vehicle registration document will be deleted. In this way, any digital vehicle registration document can be deleted, regardless of whether it was issued to you or passed on to you. Please note: If you have passed versions of this digital vehicle registration document, these will also be deleted.
The app automatically checks every time you start to see if the data on your vehicle registration documents is still up to date. New data for the periodic technical inspection or security inspection will be automatically transferred to your app. If you have received a new vehicle registration document in paper form, the corresponding digital vehicle registration document will become invalid. To be able to add the new vehicle registration document in the app again, you should add it by scanning your ID document. Please note that you must delete your invalid vehicle registration document in the app before you can add the valid vehicle registration document again in the app.
If you see an error message, there may be several reasons. Examples of an error message may be different spellings of your personal data, bad or no network or blocked holder data. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to contact our support: phone: +49 30 2598 4450, mail: i-Kfz@support.bdr.de
Different devices have the chip to read the ID card in different places and some work better than others. Try holding the ID card on your device in different places. Sometimes the problem is also solved by turning and tilting the ID card several times. If the device has recognized the ID card, it usually vibrates. Then keep the ID card and device as still as possible so that all data can be read. If you still have problems, don't hesitate to contact our support: phone: +49 30 2598 4450, mail: i-Kfz@support.bdr.de .
You will automatically be asked in the app whether you want to be accompanied by the app assistant or not. If you want to carry out the process with the help of the integrated app assistant, select "Yes" for the corresponding question.
The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt has made the app accessible in accordance with the "Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz (BGG)" and the associated "Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung (BITV 2.0)". The barriers identified as part of an accessibility certification carried out for this purpose can be found under “Accessibility Statement” in the app.
You can choose between the operating systems iOS from version 17 (Apple devices such as iPhone) and Android from version 12 (e.g. Samsung, Google Pixel).
The i-Kfz app does not support Huawei devices, as these smartphones no longer use Google services (Google Mobile Services, GMS).
The i-Kfz app cannot be used on Motorola devices due to the lack of encryption on the chips.
The app is available in German and English.
An account in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store is required to download and install the app, depending on whether iOS or Android is being used. However, no user account is required in the app itself.
During the issuance of the digital vehicle registration document, you can set a name, symbol and colour. After issuing, you can adjust your selection in the administration of this vehicle registration document.

No. The app only runs on Android (e.g. Samsung, Google Pixel) or iOS, so this is not possible.
The i-Kfz app does not support Huawei devices, as these smartphones no longer use Google services (Google Mobile Services, GMS).
The i-Kfz app cannot be used on Motorola devices due to the lack of encryption on the chips.
Yes. The digital vehicle registration document can be passed on to other persons.
As soon as the inspection institution (e.g. TÜV) has transmitted the pti/AU (exhaust emission inspection) data to the central register at the KBA, your digital vehicle registration document will be updated automatically.
You can activate the light/dark mode in your device settings. Your app will then be displayed in the respective mode.
No, but the digital vehicle registration document can be passed on as often as required.
To have the DFZ issued in the app, you need a valid ID card or residence permit with online function (eID) and the corresponding PIN.
You cannot use the i-Kfz app with your home country's ID document. Alternatively, you can use the eID function of the EU citizen card for this purpose.
The EU citizen card enables EU citizens and nationals of other contracting states of the European Economic Area aged 16 and over who do not receive an identity card or an electronic residence permit to use the eID function in Germany.
The DFZ can be issued by the holder (only natural persons using eID authentication) in the i-Kfz app. It is then provided directly in this app.
- Update: The app automatically checks for updates and validity when opened.
- Sharing: Users can create any number of images of the main DFZ and pass them to third parties for permanent or temporary use.
- View: The DFZ data can be displayed in a more user-friendly way.
- Delete: The DFZ and its associated shared documents can be deleted in the app.
You can pass on your digital vehicle registration document as many times as you like. There is no limit.
No. It is not possible to print the digital vehicle registration document and it would not be valid in printed form. The digital vehicle registration document is only valid in the intended digital form.
The digital vehicle registration document can be applied for with an electronic residence document with eID functionality.
Please contact your local vehicle registration authority.
There may be several reasons for this. If necessary, maintenance work is taking place or your internet connection is too weak to fully load the app.
No. The app is only valid in Germany.
You can delete the vehicle registration document registered to you individually in the app. At the moment, there is no possibility to delete only one digital vehicle registration document or selected vehicle registration documents in the app.
No. If you delete your digital vehicle registration document in the app, only the data in the app will be deleted. Your vehicle is still registered.
If a vehicle is taken out of service, the digital vehicle registration document automatically becomes invalid.
Yes, the digital vehicle registration document also works with special licence plates. A digital vehicle registration document is issued for the following licence plate types:
- A: Export licence plates (§ 45 FZV)
- B: Licence plates for public authority vehicles (§ 9 FZV)
- BS: Seasonal licence plates for public authority vehicles (§ 10 FZV)
- Z: Official licence plate (§ 9 FZV, classic car licence plate § 10 Para. 1 FZV, green licence plate § 12 Para. 2 FZV)
- ZS: Official seasonal licence plate (§ 10 Para. 3 FZV)
In general, the responsible officials (e.g. police) can carry out a register query (ZEVIS) if the digital vehicle registration document cannot be displayed (e.g. due to an error, maintenance work, etc.). In addition, the app is designed so that it is also available in offline mode (e.g. if the device is not connected to the Internet or the servers).
The digital vehicle registration document does not replace the paper vehicle registration document (ZB I) in the registration process, as only the paper form contains the security code.
When selling a vehicle, you do not need to pay attention to anything special in the app. If (as soon as) the new vehicle owner has re-registered the vehicle online or at the registration authority, the digital vehicle registration document is automatically marked as invalid in your app. You can then only delete the old digital vehicle registration document in the app.
Changes to the data, such as relocation or change of name, are made at the licensing authority. These changes are updated in the KBA with a time delay and are therefore also displayed in the app with a time delay. Only if you receive a new vehicle registration document in paper form will your digital vehicle registration document become invalid. You will then have to download it again into the app.
As in the analog procedure. The notification is made via the registration authority, then the digital vehicle registration document is automatically updated in the i-Kfz app.
The digital vehicle registration document can be issued for all vehicle classes.
The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) has ensured that the digital vehicle registration document is suitable for fulfilling the obligation to carry the digital registration document. The paper-based vehicle registration document must still be carried when travelling in/abroad. It is necessary to present the paper-based vehicle registration certificate during the general inspection (TÜV).
The validity of your digital vehicle registration document is determined (established/ascertained) by a visual inspection. You present your mobile device without handing it over to the person checking it (e.g. the police). To ensure that no forged digital vehicle registration document (e.g. a screenshot or a self-created image) is presented, you should interact with the app by selecting various ‘tiles’ and showing the data stored there (such as vehicle and owner data). Yellow or red banners at the top of the mobile app indicate that there are notes on the validity of the digital vehicle registration document. These can indicate content-related problems (e.g. expired main inspection or missing insurance cover) or technical problems (e.g. no background update due to missing network). If there is any doubt about the validity of the digital vehicle registration document, information will be obtained from the Central Traffic Information System (ZEVIS).
Your digital vehicle registration document and the shared versions are automatically updated and synchronised in the app. The app checks whether the data on your vehicle registration document is still up to date every time you start it.
Use of the app, including the issuing of the digital vehicle registration document, is free of charge.
The digital vehicle registration document (DFZ) contains all the relevant information required for a police check. Please ensure that the data is up to date (e.g. the date of the next general inspection).
If you have been given permission to use an image of a vehicle registration document, check before starting your journey whether the permission is still valid. The app shows you how long the image is still valid. If the period has expired, the vehicle owner can share the image with you again. Please note: An expired or invalid image may not be used during a check.
The digital vehicle registration document in the i-Kfz app is the equivalent of the paper-based vehicle registration document, known as the registration document part I. Vehicles with insurance plates, such as e-scooters or motor scooters with a maximum speed of up to 45 km/h, do not go through the traditional registration process and do not receive a registration document part I, therefore, a digital vehicle registration document cannot be issued for these vehicles.
In the future, you will be able to view your supplementary sheet digitally. Until then, you should carry the paper-based version with you, for example for the general inspection (HU/TÜV).
The person to whom the digital vehicle registration document has been passed can view all information that can also be seen on the paper form, as well as information that is issued.
Access to the camera is only required to scan the QR code when adding or sharing a digital vehicle registration document. An access request will appear on your screen, which you can agree to.
The app is available for both Android and iOS users. You can find the app in the Play Store or in the App Store. Please make sure to download the app exclusively from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Other sources are unauthorised and pose a security risk.
The digital vehicle registration document is only displayed after a biometric check according to the settings of the device.
The recommendation is to request a vehicle registration document again on another device. That process makes the digital registration document automatically invalid on the stolen device.
At present, it is planned to use the paper document and the digital vehicle document in parallel.
Our support is available from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 16:00 by e-mail ( i-Kfz@support.bdr.de ) and by telephone (+49 30 2598 4450). Excluded from this are federal public holidays and public holidays in the State of Berlin.
No. Please delete your digital vehicle registration documents before deleting the app. Otherwise, redistributed shared digital vehicle registration documents will remain active and you will not be able to recall them. If you install the app again, you must have the digital vehicle registration document reissued in the app. Then all redistributed digital registration documents will also be deactivated and you can share them again.
